It’s going to be obvious if you think for a minute about it. Electric lights have only existed for a bit over a century, but the colour change happenings in colour changing gemstones have been knowing for much longer. Originally, it was defined as the difference folks viewed between sunlight and firelight, be that from a candle, oil lamp, or whatever. So the definition was modified to be a comparison between electric and natural lights.

This is the standard for defining the colour change in colour altering gemstones: it is the dissimilarity between what you see in natural, (I.E. sunshine,) and any other light source.

They often reveal exactly the same hues as natural light, which explains why people started checking for colour change with two types of electric lights. However, we know of colour changing gemstones that don’t react to fluorescent the same as natural light. So it is really no longer an adequate when checking for a colour to use two electric lights change.

Checking Account for Colour Change In Color Shifting Gemstones

Many folks check several stones for colour change. That this is unlucky may be shown by one glaring instance. Some years back, some diamonds were sent by one of Hollywood’s most dominant families for grading to the GIA. The reports came back with no mention of them being something which significantly affected their value, colour shifting gemstones. For security reasons, there were no windows in the ranking place.

In the past couple decades, many new colour altering gemstones have appeared and new ones are continuously being found. In today’s classifieds, there are two colour change Sphenes being offered for sale. Clearly they do exist, although I’ve never heard of a colour change Sphene before. If someone hadn’t troubled to assess these stone, they would have been overlooked.

The lesson is straightforward; you should check for the colour change in all gems. We do not understand there’s no excuse for missing such an important bit of info and all nature has to offer us.
